Reading Devanāgarī

Letters that look alike

Much of the slowness in reading comes down to a handful of pairs. In two of them the difference is the headline, the bar along the top: it runs over the whole of म ma and घ gha, and only over the stem of भ bha and ध dha. In the drill the wrong answers offered are the look-alikes.

pa, ṣa

ṣa is pa with a stroke across it.

ba, va

ba has the stroke inside its loop; va has none.

ma, bha

gha, dha

ḍa, ṅa, da

ṅa is ḍa with a dot beside it.

kha, rava

kha is one letter; rava is ra then va, two letters side by side.

ya, tha

Drill

All 15 items, both ways: Devanāgarī to IAST, then IAST to Devanāgarī. A miss comes back later in the round; the lesson is drilled when every one has been right both ways. Progress is kept in this browser.
