Vowel signs on a consonant मात्रा mātrā

After a consonant a vowel is a sign on it rather than a letter: after it, above it, below it, or, for short i, before it. That one is written before its consonant and said after it: कि ki. Here is every vowel on k, then the few letters that take a sign their own way, then a sample from around the chart.

This browser has no Hindi or Sanskrit voice, so a tap stays silent.

Letters that bend a sign

ru and rū hang the vowel sign on the side of ra rather than under it. On ha and śa many fonts draw the ṛ sign into the letter.

Drill

All 35 items, both ways: Devanāgarī to IAST, then IAST to Devanāgarī. A miss comes back later in the round; the lesson is drilled when every one has been right both ways. Progress is kept in this browser.
